The XIV-th Conference of Hydro Project Explorers
The sessions of the conference take place at a beautiful resort house near the town of Solnechnogorsk, which is located about 50 km north-west of the Moscow city.
This conference jointly convened by the Russian Shareholding Company "Electrical Power Networks", the world famous institute "HYDROPROJECT" and The Russian academy of Science, Scientific Council on the Geo-ecology and Engineering Geology. It was dedicated mainly to the large dam safety and to the investigations applied to large dam design. The event would appear as one of the ICOLD (Int'l Comission of Large Dams) activities.
Among other 360 participants, I have contributed to one of four concurrent sessions - the engineering hydrology - with the report:
Shutov, V.A., A.A. Kapotov, N.I., Kapotova, and I.V. Nedogarko. Special hydrological and environmental investigations on the gas pipeline routes.
The other reports developed at this sessions are in particular:
- Babkin, A.V. (Saint Petersburg Hydro-meteorological University): The water balance model for estimation of the periodical changes in hydrological characteristics of inland water bodies.
- Martin, V.I, and T.F. Gurjeva (a project design institute from the Ufa city): Influence of the karst on the low flow conditions in the area of designed Yumagusinskoje reservoir, the Belaja river. (The report was of interest to me as earlier employed to an investigation on the Belaja river basin in Republic of Bashkortostan).
- Belikov, V.E. (Saint Petersburg Division of the HYDROPROJECT): Necessary program of the hydrological investigations for substantiation of the hydro-power plant construction.
- Sulimova, L.I. (Saint Petersburg Division of the HYDROPROJECT): Measures for preventing the ice jams in the area close by the Ust' Srednekansk (the Kolyma river, Republik of Sakha, Yakutia) hydro-power plant.
- Bogdan, M.F. (the project institute "AtomENERGOPROJECT"): Complex investigations of the water bodies (reservoirs) around a nuclear power plant.
- Silaeva, L.F. (the project institute "AtomENERGOPROJECT"): Special support for project design with the hydrological data on the events of extremely low probability. (Very interesting was about the extreme snow pack loads on roofs and other constructions).
- Panteleev, V.S. (the HYDROPROJECT, Moscow): Improving the techniques for riverbed survey. (Lecturer told about the GPS-based mapping, echo-location by sonar, etc.).
- Bortnikov, Yu. A. (Ukrainian Division of the HYDROPROJECT, Kiev, Ukraine): On hydrological aspects of the large dam safety. (The task was to draw attention to the safety problems of the Dnieper Cascade of reservoirs, in particular, to the problem of how to re-construct the "natural" flow parameters, i.e. those which were usual for this great river before the hydro-power construction).
Of the reports developed at the other sessions, I have listened the following:
- Asarin, A.E. (the HYDROPROJECT, Moscow, Moscow): Floods in Russia: Problems and the ways to their solving
- Filippova, E.A. (the Vedeneev Hydraulic Institute, Saint Petersburg): Estimating the status of the hydro-power structures based upon multi-variate statistical analysis.
- Gordienko, S.G. and I.N. Gusakova (the Vedeneev Hydraulic Institute, Saint Petersburg): Calculation of the filtration flow at the base of a ground-built dam.
- Il'in, V.V., Yu.S. Shevljagin and A.I Yudkevich (the HYDROPROJECT, Moscow, Moscow): Experience in the usage of PC-based technique for engineering geological support of the hydro-power projects.
- Kagan, A.a. and N.F. Krivonogova (the Vedeneev Hydraulic Institute, Saint Petersburg): Engineering geological monitoring of the hydro-power structures in permafrost areas.
- Madgazin, E.A. (Uzbekistan Division of the HYDROPROJECT, Tashkent, Uzbekistan): Investigation in the dam safety using geo-physical methods and geo-radar technique.
- Saveljeva, Yu. Yu. (the Vedeneev Hydraulic Institute, Saint Petersburg): Use of the numerical simulation of the spatial filtration for the engineering design and environmentally oriented urban development.
- Varga, A.A. Modeling the rocky landslides
Several reports are published yet in the "Hydro-Power Construction", No. 3, 2003. This journal, at least contents of its several issues may be available at http://www.energy-journals.ru
The conference was organized excellently with many informal discussions, e.g. the "round table" discussion about the problems of the information technologies (IT) for engineering applications. The moderator, Prof. I.A. Vanchurov from the Moscow University strongly emphasize the psychology problems of the IT. Many of explorers and software developers share of their co-operation experience. A good example has been remembered concerning the usage of the special software: the SURFERTM which many people use to interpolate areally distributed data. Being adopted to land survey, it can be ineffective and even useless when interpolating the land marks usually obtained for only points (sites) with excessive elevation.
A leading software developing and distributing company "Consistent Software" (http://www.csoft.ru) has presented its recent packages (the improvements of AutoCAD, ArchiCAD, etc. helping the engineering design). I would recommend to recognize the CGS Software PLATEIA and Carlson Software SurvCADD with modules allowing the design of hydraulic structures and computation of surface hydrology objects).
